What is immunology?
Immunology is a scientific discipline that focuses on the investigation of the cellular, molecular, and organ-based mechanisms involved in antigen recognition and processing, as well as the subsequent interactions and responses among these components. This field encompasses the analysis of both the beneficial and adverse outcomes of the immune response, including strategies for its suppression or augmentation. A primary function of the immune system is to provide protection against pathogens or molecules identified as alien or “non-self,” through the activation of innate followed by adaptive immune mechanisms. Furthermore, immunology includes the study of immune system-mediated disease prevention via appropriate vaccination strategies. However, it also addresses the detrimental aspects of immune function, such as autoimmune responses – where the immune system mistakenly targets endogenous molecules as if they were foreign – and hypersensitivity reactions.
